ARE A HARVESTER
In Luke 10:2 we read: "He told them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'"
Whenever I hear this verse I see a picture of someone packing up their whole life to move to a very small town in a distant country where they don't really understand the language in order to preach the gospel and evangelise the locals.*
But while I believe Jesus is speaking about people doing missionary work in this verse, I don't think He is only referring to them.
You see, we all can be workers in God's harvest field right there where we are.
We don't have to travel to a distant country or learn a new language so God can use us to bring in the harvest.
He can use us to harvest souls right there in our little sphere of influence.
We just have to make ourselves available to Him.
We have to obey Him when His Spirit prompts us to speak to someone and tell them about Him.
We have to stop worrying about what others will think of us and obey Him when He tells us to share our testimony with someone.
We have to get rid of our fear and obey when He instructs us to go up to someone we don't know and pray for that person.
We have to follow His guidance and do what He tells us to do and trust Him to work in the hearts of those we witness to.
When Jesus told the disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations... and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20) He wasn't just commanding them to do it, He was commanding us as well.
He told them they would be His "witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). They started right there where they were, in Jerusalem, and then was sent by God as He chose to send them to the different parts of the world.
I believe He wants to use us the same way.
Some of us will stay in 'Jerusalem'.
Others will go to 'Samaria'.
And others will go to the ends of the earth.
Let us make ourselves available to the Lord and go where He instructs us to go.
And if He asks us to stay in 'Jerusalem' and be His witness in our little place of influence, may we obey Him and work with Him to bring in the harvest where we are.
* Please note that I don't believe missionaries really fit this picture in my head! Though they may go to distant countries and often to small towns, they usually do speak the language or they are learning to do so.
