THOUGHTS ON PSALM 112

1 Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments - In the very first verse we see the person who fears the Lord, is a blessed person. In Proverbs 1:7 we read that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge and Psalm 111:10 says it is the beginning of wisdom. We also see the person who delights in the commandments of the Lord is blessed. When you delight in the commandments of the Lord you will do what He tells you to do. So in this first verse we see a person who has respect and reverence for the Lord and who obeys the Lord is one who is blessed.

2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed - Do you want you children and grandchildren to be blessed? Then you need to teach them to obey the Lord and you need to obey Him yourself. You see, you can't expect your children to obey the Lord when you don't do it yourself. You need to be an example to them of what it looks like to walk in obedience to the Lord.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever - The Lord blesses us with both things spiritual and things physical. All good things come from Him. Rigtheousness is a gift from God. We receive His righteousness when we make Jesus the Lord of our live. This righteouness will never pass away, it will indeed endure forever. It cannot be taken away from us and it cannot be diminished or stopped through our sins, because we didn't become righteous through our own good works in the first place.

4 Light arises in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious and compassionate and righteous - When you were born again, the Lord rescued you from the domain of darkness, and transferred you to the kingdom of His beloved Son, the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13). You don't have to live in darkness anymore, but you can live in the light the Lord gives you through His Spirit and His Word.

5 It is well with the man who is gracious and lends; he will maintain his cause in judgment - One of the definitions of grace is 'unmerited favour'. When we are gracious towards others we show them the same unmerited favour the Lord shows us, in other words we treat them with love, goodness and kindness without them having to deserve it.

6 For he will never be shaken; the righteous will be remembered forever - Psalm 16:8 says: "I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken." Psalm 21:7 reads: "For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the lovingkindness of the Most High he will not be shaken." And finally, Psalm 62:6: "He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be shaken." From these verses we see the person who sets his eyes on the Lord, the person who trusts in Him and firmly stands on Him and His Word will not be shaken. Life happens, but whatever life throws at him, the righteous person will be able to handle, for he will not do it in his own strength, but in the strength of the Lord.

7-8 He will not fear evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is upheld, he will not fear, until he looks with satisfaction on his adversaries - A believer doesn't have to fear evil tidings, for his trust is in the Lord. God has promised to be with us always and He will lead us throught even the most difficult situations. But we need to ask Him to do so. Then we need to trust Him to do it and we need to faithfully follow where ever He leads us.

9-10 He has given freely to the poor, his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be exalted in honor. The wicked will see it and be vexed, he will gnash his teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked will perish - The wicked will always see believers as a threat. This happens because Satan sees believers as a threat and he uses people who don't know the Lord to persecute believers in order to get them to turn from the Lord or, if he can't get them to do that, to get rid of them in other ways.

I find this a very encouraging psalm.

Let us take what the Lord is saying to heart and obey Him.

Let us trust Him and build our lives on Him.
