SIX CAUSES OF DEPRESSION (3)

We've been looking at a number of things that can cause us to become depressed: the pressures of life, unconfessed sin, religious legalism and lack of personal discipline.

Today we are going to look at the last two.

1. Poor care of the body.
Not a lot of us realise that we can get depressed when we do not take proper care of our bodies.

You are not taking proper care of you body when you don't eat a healthy diet but try to live on fast food all the time.

Not getting any exercise or enough rest also means you are not taking proper care of your body.

But Romans 12:1 gives us the following instruction: "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

It's time we realise that our bodies are God's temple. We need to take care of it.

Mark Virkler said this regarding taking care of our body: "If our body is dragging it is hard for our spirit to soar because they are interconnected. If you want to soar, you need to soar body, soul and spirit. All three need to function together smoothly."

Take a good look at your life.

What does your diet look like? Do you live on fast food? Do you eat enough fruit and vegetables and drink enough water?

Do you exercise?

Do you get enough rest?

If you answer 'no' to any of these questions, then you need to realise you can change it.

With the help of God, and in some cases a little professional help, you can change your life and begin to take proper care of your body.

Remember, you have been bought with a price and you are not your own. Therefore glorify God in your body.

2. Sickness and physical malfunction.
Being sick or not being able to function optimally in some way can lead to depression.

Just think back to the last time you had the flu.

You just wanted to stay in bed. You didn't want to see anyone or talk to anyone. You felt pain in strange places and you had a serious lack of joy. You didn't even have an appetite.

Imagine feeling this way for a long period of time.

No wonder sickness and physical malfunction can cause us to get depressed!

But the Lord doesn't want us to be sick.

In the gospels we see Jesus healing every single person who came to Him for healing.

In Isaiah and in Peter we read that we have been healed by the wounds of Jesus (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24).

And in 3 John 1:2: "Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well."

God wants us healed and whole so we can accomplish the things He has planned for us to do.

When we are ill we need to do what those in the gospels did.

They came to Jesus.

They asked Him to heal them (sometimes someone else asked for them because they were not physically present).

And they believed He could and He would.

And every single time He healed them.

Let us believe the Lord wants to heal us, that He can heal us and that He will heal us.

Let us come to Him and ask.

He will do the rest.

This concludes our three part series on six causes of depression. As I've said, it is by no means an exhaustive list, but I trust it gave you something to think about.

If you are depressed, my prayer is that the Lord will show you the reason behind it, and that you will allow Him to heal you and set you free.
