For the last two days we spoke about the last words Jesus spoke to His disciples before going to the cross.
We looked at both John 14 and 15 and today we are going to take a look at a few verses in chapter 16.
In verses 5-15 we read the following regarding the Holy Spirit: "But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you."
Imagine constantly being with Jesus for 3 years.
Imagine all the things you've learnt during that time, all the things you have seen.
Now imagine Him telling you He is going away, but that it will be to your advantage.
I guess the disciples were a bit surprised when they heard Jesus say this.
I mean, how can it be more to their advantage to be without Him than to be with Him?
But then He gives the answer to their unspoken question.
It is to their (and our) advantage because He sent the Holy Spirit to make His home inside every born again child of God.
You see, when Jesus was on earth He was just like us - He could only be in one place at a time.
But through the Holy Spirit He is in the heart of every believer, everywhere.
Someone once said that the life of Jesus is supposed to be reproduced in all God's children.
That can only happen through the Holy Spirit inside us.
Yesterday we spoke about the fact that we are not able to produce fruit on our own, that apart from Jesus we can do nothing.
This is the reason why that is true - we cannot reproduce the life of Jesus (bearing fruit) apart from Him. It is not possible. Only He can reproduce His life in us, and He chose to do so through the Holy Spirit, also called the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9).
The Spirit came to help us, to reveal God's truth to us and help us walk in it. He came to talk to us and instruct us. He came to make that which is real of Jesus a reality in our lives as well. He came to reproduce the life of Christ in us.
Just think about that for a moment.
Before you believed in Jesus as Lord and Saviour you were dead to God. The Word says you were dead in your trespasses and sins. You were separated from God and you had no hope. There was nothing good in you, in fact, you were not able to do much good even if you tried.
But then Jesus came into your life and you were born again.
Your spirit became alive to God and you became one with Him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17). Now your spirit, the real you, looks exactly like Jesus - righteous, holy, pure, without spot or blemish.
The life of Jesus has been reproduced in your life.
However, that life shouldn't remain on the inside; it should come to the outside so it can be seen by those around you.
All through your life the Holy Spirit will work in you to sanctify you, which simply means He will help you grow in holiness. And little by little you will begin to look like Jesus on the outside as well. You will do the same works He did, and even greater works (John 14:12).
You will bear fruit that lasts.
The life of Jesus Christ will be reproduced in you!
