God Thoughts

I was thinking about the lady described in Proverbs 31.

A number of things she does doesn't sound like things we do in this day and age, but when you think about them a bit, you realise our lives as women look pretty much the same as hers did all those years ago.

"An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life" - A man is still very blessed when he finds a woman to marry whom he can trust, a woman who does him only good. Ladies, let us not try to change our husbands into the man we want him to be, but let us work with the Lord to change ourselves into the women the Lord wants us to be. If we do that, we will also be the women our husbands need and we will be a blessing to them and do them good.

"She looks for wool and flax and works with her hands in delight. She is like merchant ships; she brings her food from afar" - Most women work outside the home. Some don't have husbands, for whatever reason, and have to take care of their children on their own. They are just like this woman who goes to great lengths to make sure there is enough to take care of her family.

"She rises also while it is still night and gives food to her household and portions to her maidens" - I remember a friend used to get up at 3 in the morning to be in time for work! She didn't work normal hours, which explains the time she had to get up. But whatever the time you get up in the morning, if you are the mom in the house, it is normally up to you to get everyone else out of bed and to get them dressed and fed before work and school.

"She considers a field and buys it; from her earnings she plants a vineyard... She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies belts to the tradesmen" - Many women are business owners. They are making deals, they are buying and selling. Their businesses help them take care of their families, the same way the lady from Proverbs 31 took care of her family through the businesses she owned.

"She is not afraid of the snow for her household, for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She makes coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple" - Granted, very few mothers still make clothes for their children, but whether you make the clothes yourself of buy them from a shop, it is still the mom who makes sure her husband and children are clothed and that those clothes are clean and in good condition.

"She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue" - Moms are wise. They know things and can teach you things most other people can't. It is mom who stays up late with a child who needs to study for a test. It is mom who helps the children with their homework. It is mom who patiently explains some part of school work over and over again until the child 'gets it'.

Yes, ladies, we may not do the things the woman in Proverbs 31 does in exactly the same way she did it, but we are all still taking care of our families the same way she did.

Let us not get weary of doing these things. Children are only with you for a while before they grow up and go their own way. A spouse may die or leave you. Enjoy taking care of your family while you have the opportunity.

Let us do it in such a way so this can be said of us as well: "Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: 'Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.'"
