GOD IS LOVE
In 1 John 4:8 and 16 we read these words: "God is love."
I was thinking about these words along with some other verses for Scripture that speaks about the love of God, and I want to share my thoughts with you.
Romans 5:5 says the love of God has been poured out within our hearts. As you read the verse in context, it clearly means the love of God, plain and simple. But if God is love, then this also means God Himself has been poured out within our hearts. This is true of every born again child of God, for He gave us the Holy Spirit, who is the third Person in the Godhead, to live in us, so God has been poured out within our hearts.
Ephesians 3:17 instructs us to be rooted and grounded in love. Again this is talking about being rooted and grounded in the love God has for us, but if God is love, then this also means we are to be rooted and grounded in God Himself.
Romans 8:39 gives us the assurance that nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God. Once again, if God is love, then that also means nothing will be able to separate us from God. In Matthew 1:23 Jesus is called Immanuel, God with us, and in Hebrews 13:5 God said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you," so again we see this is true - nothing will be able to separate us from God.
In 1 Corinthians 13, the famous chapter on love, we read about the things love does as well as those love doesn't do. And if God is love, everything in this chapter is true of Him as well - He is patient and kind, He does not seek His own, He does not take into account a wrong suffered, He rejoices with the truth, and He never fails, to name but a few. As you read through the Word you will see all these love characteristics are true of God Himself, for He is love.
Can you think of other verses in Scripture that teaches about the love of God that you can apply this idea to?
