HOPE... IN WHOM OR WHAT?

We all need hope.

Without hope our world crashes down around our ears and we see no future and no reason to go on.

But in what do we place our hope?

Or in whom do we hope?

The Bible talks about a number of things we could hope on, but when we do, we will only be disappointed.

1 Timothy 6:17 warns us against placing our hope in riches: "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy."

Money can be very uncertain. You can have a lot today only to lose it all tomorrow. Therefore hoping in our riches is a waste of time.

Psalm 145:3 talks about trusting in other human beings: "Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation."

People are fallible. They can let you down. They can promise you the world and then deliver nothing. So it isn't a good idea to placing your hope in another person.

Some people place their hope in an idol. Idols are anything we put ahead of God.

Isaiah 4:19-20 says: "As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, a goldsmith plates it with gold, and a silversmith fashions chains of silver. He who is too impoverished for such an offering selects a tree that does not rot; he seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman to prepare an idol that will not totter."

And then Habakkuk 2:18 warns: "
Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak."

Money, people, things other than God...

...if we are honest most of us have, at one time or another, placed our hope in one of these things.

But the Bible doesn't just warn us against the things that will let us down when we hope in them; it also teaches us where to place our hope.

Take a look at the following verses:

Psalm 43:5: "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."

Psalm 42:5: "
Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God."

Psalm 71:5: "
For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth."

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17: "
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word."

Romans 15:13: "
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Only one Person can give us true hope.

He will not let us down.

He doesn't make a promise and then not keep it.

He is faithful.

He is eternal.

He will still stand when everything else has fallen.

Put your hope in God.

He is the God of hope.

Confess Him as your hope.

And by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abount in hope!

In whom or in what have you placed your hope?
