God Thoughts

Journal | Need prayer? | Previous thoughts | Upliftment | About me

Yesterday morning I lay awake for a little while before getting up, thinking about hearing and listening to the voice of the Lord.

I'm learning hearing the Lord and listening to Him is a journey, something I need to learn and practice. It is not a switch I can flick, but more like learning to play the piano.

The first time you sit in front of a piano you know nothing. You have to learn which note is C and which is B and so on. You have to learn how to read music. You have to practice endless scales to get your fingers supple, and as you learn and practice you get better at it.

I took singing lessons when I was a child. I also had to practice my singing every week before going for my next lesson. And the funny thing is, my teacher could hear when I didn't practice.

Thinking back on that I realise all those 'warm-up' exercises I had to do was actually the way to develop my voice. Pity I didn't realise it while I took the lessons! If I had, I might have been more dedicated in doing them.

We also have a Teacher who is with us all the time to teach us how to hear and listen to the voice of the Lord.

In John 14:26 Jesus says: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

The Holy Spirit is the One teaching us all things, including hearing and listening to the voice of the Lord.

And as we allow Him to teach us (I believe He teaches each one of us in a way we will understand, so there may be differences in how He teaches me and how He teaches you) and as we get more acquainted with the voice of the Lord and practice listening to Him and doing what He says, it is like becoming better at playing piano.

When you practice playing the piano often, you make fewer mistakes.

When you practice listening to the Lord and obeying Him, there will be less and less times you miss Him. You will hear Him more clearly and more often.

But remember, it is a journey. It takes time and it takes practice. And it definitely takes a Teacher who can teach us.

Let Him teach you. Ask Him to teach you.

Work with Him and practice listening and obeying.

The more you practice the better you will get.

Don't let another day go by - start this journey today!
