God Thoughts

There are a few times in the gospels where we read a specific prayer Jesus prayed.

One of these prayers is found in Matthew 11:25-26: "At that time Jesus said, 'I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.'"

Right after the prayer He speaks about knowing the Father, and how He is the One revealing the Father to us.

And then He gives us an invitation: "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light'" (vs.28-30).

This invitation is first and foremost about coming to Jesus for salvation.

You see, the Jewish people had so many laws to keep in order to be in right standing with God. They didn't just have to keep the laws actually found in the Torah, they had to keep a bunch of other laws that were spin-offs, so to speak, of the laws God gave them.

The religious leaders of the time came up with many different interpretations of the laws of God. For instance, God instructed them to keep the Sabbath holy and not to work on the Sabbath. So one day, a Sabbath, Jesus and His disciples were walking through the grainfields. The disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat. When the Pharisees saw this, they were not impressed. They accused the disciples of doing what the law forbid. According to their way of thinking, the disciples were working!

Trying to keep all these laws was a very heavy burden to carry.

They couldn't do it anyway, because the law was not meant to be kept to be in right standing with God, but to show the people they couldn't keep it and needed a Saviour.

So when Jesus invites all who are weary and heavy-laden, He is speaking to people who knew what it was like to be bogged down with keeping laws, rules and regulations to try to please God and be in right standing with Him.

Jesus invites them, and us, to come to Him.

He is the only One who can give us rest for our souls.

When we come to Him and place our faith in Him for salvation, He gives us His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Now we are in right standing with God without having to keep any laws or rules and regulations.

In the sight of God we have been justified, which simply means we have been declared in right standing with God based on what Jesus had done for us on the cross.

The yoke of Jesus - the way we now live life after being born again - is not heavy and hard. It is easy and light, because now we don't live life in our own strength, but we have the Holy Spirit and His power to help us do it.

Now we are able to do the right thing not because we want to impress God or earn our right standing with Him, but because we are already in right standing with Him and He helps us do what is right in His sight.

Are you weary and heavy-laden?

Do you still try to keep the law in order to have peace with God?

Come to Jesus.

He will give you rest.

He will give you what you cannot earn - rightstanding with God.

And He will help you live your life to glorify God.
