God Thoughts

God gave us a number of things, which were His very own, to make us who we are in Christ and to help us live the life He created us to live.

We have been looking at some of these things.

Today we are going to look at God giving us His authority.

There are a lot of verses in the Word speaking about the authority the Lord gave us.

I want to share a few of them with you.

In Matthew 28:18-20 we read: "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'"

Here we see all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus. That means Satan holds no more authority. Jesus defeated him and took back the authority Adam and Eve handed him in the Garden of Eden.

Because we are in Jesus, we share in that authority. Therefore Satan has no more authority over us, as we can clearly see in James 4:7: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

When we made Jesus our Lord and Saviour He gave us a new spirit: "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7).

We now have the ability to live life in the power of God. We can love all people, just as God loves all people. We can control ourselves and not give in to fear and temptation, but we can resist the devil by standing firm in our faith. When we do that, he flees from us, as the Word tells us he will do.

In Luke 10:19 we read these words spoken by Jesus: "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you."

And Mark 16:17-18 says it like this: "And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My Name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Do you see that Jesus gave us authority over the power of the enemy?

We do not have to fear him, for Romans 16:20 also tells us: "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet." According to Rick Renner, a Greek scholar, Romans 16:20 suggests this idea: "The God of peace will smash and completely obliterate Satan under your feet! If Satan tries to get in your way or to block your path, lift your feet high, stomp and pound down hard, crushing the enemy under your feet and leaving him in a heap, trampled beyond recognition..."

The Lord gave you His authority, so don't allow Satan to walk over you anymore. Next time he tries to stand in your way, resist him with the authority the Lord had given you. Lift you feet high and stomp on him until he is crushed!
