God Thoughts

On their journey to the Promised Land the Israelites were led by the Lord in two different ways - a pillar of cloud and one of fire.

We read about this in Exodus 13:21: "The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night."

After the construction of the tabernacle we read: "Now on the day that the tabernacle was erected the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony, and in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle, until morning. So it was continuously; the cloud would cover it by day, and the appearance of fire by night" (Numbers 9:15-16).

During this time the Lord led them in this way: "Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would then set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp. At the command of the LORD the sons of Israel would set out, and at the command of the LORD they would camp; as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, the sons of Israel would keep the LORD'S charge and not set out. If sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, according to the command of the LORD they remained camped. Then according to the command of the LORD they set out" (Numbers 9:17-20).

So when God moved, they moved.

And when God stood still, they stood still.

There is not a single account in the Word that tells us they moved when God stood still, or they stood still when God moved during this stage of their journey.

No, they did exactly what the Lord led them to do.

Think about our lives today.

God still leads us, though not through something that is physically seen as was the case with the Israelites.

Now the Lord leads us through His Spirit.

....do we obey as they did?

Do we go when the Lord says go, or stay when the Lord says stay?

Do we go in the direction He tells us, or do we follow our own idea and go in the opposite direction?

When you have a GPS in your car to help you navigate the best possible way to a certain destination, you follow the instructions given.

You know following the instructions would get you to where you are going.

You also know you will not reach your destination of you ignore the instructions and do the opposite of what you are told to do.

It works exactly the same in our walk with the Lord.

He shows us the way, giving us the right instructions at exactly the right time.

Now it is up to us to follow those instructions.

If we do, we will get to where He wants us to be.

And we will get there exactly when we are supposed to get there.

Unfortunately the opposite is also true.

Ignore His instructions and you end up where you are not supposed to be and don't want to be.

I want to encourage you to follow the leading of the Lord exactly as He gives it.

Move when He says move.

Stay when He says stay.

Follow His specific instructions and you will always end up at exactly the right destination at exactly the right time.
