During the month of August and part of the month of September the Jewish people enter into a biblical holiday called
For 40 days from the first of Elul until Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) repentance is being emphasised.
Repentance is more than just being sorry for some sin you have committed. Repentance is a complete turning around to go in the other direction with a determination to not commit that specific sin again.
Even though I knew about Yom Kippur, I never knew about Elul. I only found out about it a day or two ago, but as I read about it, I got more intrigued.
As I understand it the whole idea of these 40 days is to draw closer to God, to allow Him to shine His light on hidden sin in your life and with His help to turn away from that sin.
Elul may be a Jewish holiday, but repentance is needed in the lives of Christians as well, so drawing closer to the Lord so He can show me the things in my life that are not pleasing to Him, and then working with Him to get rid of it seems like a good idea to me.
I found a website (www.bridgesforpeace.com) where you can download more information on Elul, including some ideas to help you during this time of repentance.
Elul began on the 15th of August, but I don't think the Lord would mind that I am a little behind schedule as repentance is not supposed to be only a 40 day experience, but a lifestyle.
Maybe you want to draw closer to the Lord as well.
Maybe you know about sin in your life that you need to get rid of.
Maybe there are sin in your life you are not even aware of.
Won't you join me, and maybe millions of Jewish people and Christians around the world, in coming before the Lord in a time of repentance.
Let us allow the Holy Spirit to change us into the image of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And let us make sure there is peace between us and those around us.
