God Thoughts

Not something we like to talk about.

To most people the word carries the idea of not being allowed to do anything fun.

To others it means following a bunch of rules and regulations.

Most Christians struggle with the concept because they don't really know what it means or how to achieve it.

And then we read the Word and we find commands like these:

"...for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:16).

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

According to the Strong's Concordance the word translated 'holiness' in Hebrews 12:14 means "the process of making or becoming holy, set apart, sanctification, holiness, consecration."

HELPS Word Studies says the following about holiness: "use of the believer being progressively transformed by the Lord into His likeness (similarity of nature)."

So the long and short of it is that holiness simply means to become more like the Lord.

This is a process.

It's going to continue as long as you live.

But it is something that needs to happen.

Jesus prayed for us to be sanctified (made holy) by the Word (John 17:17).

You see, "all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

When we behold the glory of Jesus in the Word we are "being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:28).

We need to understand that we will never become holy in our own strength.

We need the Word and we need the Holy Spirit.

He will show us in the Word what needs to change in our lives.

And He will empower us to make that change.

We need to rely on Him and His power.

When we work with the Holy Spirit and allow Him to change us more and more into the image of our Lord, we will begin to experience a more intimate walk with the Lord.

And who doesn't want that?

My prayer is that we all read the Word so we know God's truth and then to work with the Holy Spirit and allow Him empower us and change us into the image of Jesus.

May every one of us grow in holiness!
