| About me
I've written about the armour of God before.
Every time I think, pray or write about the armour, I start with the helmet of salvation, then go down to the breastplate of righteousness, then to the belt of truth and on to the shoes of the gospel of peace. I finish off with the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit.
I do this because I see a person in front of me, and if I were to dress this person in the armour, for some reason I would begin with putting the helmet on his head and finish with placing the shield and the sword in his hands.
However, I have noticed that the armour is not described in that order.
In Ephesians 6:14-17 it says: "Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of rigtheousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God."
Do you see the order in which the armour is described?
Belt of truth.
Breastplate of righteousness.
Shoes of the gospel of peace.
Shield of faith.
Helmet of salvation.
Sword of the Spirit.
In His prayer recorded in John 17 Jesus prayed: "Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth" (John 17:17).
The first piece of the armour we need is the belt of truth, which is the Word of God.
The Word teaches us about Jesus, showing us that we are not able to keep His laws and that we can't save ourselves. It shows us we need a Saviour. It also shows us the Saviour - Jesus.
When we believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour, we receive His righteousness as our very own: "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Now that we know the truth and we have received the righteousness of Jesus, we have peace with God: "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ..." (Romans 5:1).
By keeping our eyes on Jesus all the time, we receive the faith we need from Him: "...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith..." (Hebrews 12:2).
The helmet of salvation protects our mind when Satan attacks us with his lies.
Finally we have the sword of the Spirit, which is also the Word of God.
This Word is "living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).
I find it interesting that the first item mentioned is the Word of God, and the last item is also the Word of God.
It is like two bookends holding the rest of the items together.
You will not know the truth about the righteousness of Jesus that can be yours, nor will you know you can have peace with God without the Word.
You will also not be able to fix your eyes on Jesus and receive His faith without the Word.
You will not know about the salvation made ready for you without the Word.
And you will certainly not be able to win the fight of faith without the Word.
Again we see we need the Word of God in our lives, preferably on a daily basis.
Have you spent some time in God's Word today?
